SOS Nicaragua - San Juan, Costa Rica
Our last trip took us to San Juan Costa Rica, where we worked with a local organization, SOS Nicaragua, in getting both food and glasses to refugees fleeing the Nicaraguan civil conflict.
The conflict in Nicaragua is years in the making, with decades of infighting fueling the most recent protests. Substantial government oppression combined with a declining economy has led to the exodus of nearly 25,000 Nicaraguans into neighboring Costa Rica, where an uncertain future awaits.
Local enclaves have formed to support the burgeoning refugee community, but lack of access to basic healthcare, and problematic wait times for residency and work permits mean that the transition process isn’t easy.
Support these refugees by helping them take the first step to helping themselves with the gift of sight. Take a look at SOS Nicaragua for more information.
